Fragen [wie “Wie fühlen Sie sich?”] entspringen einer eigentümlichen [journalistischen] Berufsauffassung. Sie zielen nicht auf Information, sondern auf einen Selbstdarstellungstest. Herausgefunden werden soll, wie einer reagiert. Lässt er sich herausfordern, wann verliert er die Kontrolle, ist es ihm peinlich, entgleitet ihm die Situation, verrät er sich oder uns unwillkürlich etwas? Oder liefert er ab, was dann gönnerhaft als „menschlich“ bezeichnet wird, den „Menschen Guido Westerwelle“ beispielsweise?

Die Zuschauer kommen so in die Rolle von Testpsychologen, denen es im Grund völlig gleichgültig sein muss, worum es in Afghanistan geht, weil sie voll damit beschäftigt sind, die Reflexe der Testperson, ihr Minenspiel, ihre Grammatikfehler und ihre Belastbarkeit zu beobachten. Auch darum war jene Szene, in der sich der Außenminister von einem Journalisten verbat, in seiner ersten deutschen Pressekonferenz im Amt auf Englisch um eine englische Antwort ersucht zu werden, so beliebt bei Journalisten, die solch eine Berufseinstellung haben.

Für Journalisten dieses Schlages [ergibt sich der Vorteil], dass sie sich gar nicht erst vorbereiten müssen zu Afghanistan, Fiskalpolitik, Saudi-Arabien oder Diplomatie. Kein einziger Gedanke wird in die Sachdimension der Fragen investiert.

“We tracked this supercell from Nebraska to South Dakota, over a distance of 800 miles, in June 2008. We were driving 95 miles an hour to avoid getting swallowed by this thing, and then we’d stop for just a few seconds to snap photos. The idea is to stay in the sweet spot, away from the storm’s precipitation, and follow it while it develops. Warm, moist air fuels the cloud until it can’t hold any more, and then it blasts out gusts of cold air and rain. This was taken right before the storm dropped golf-ball-size hail on us.”
